From the 2012 album Glass Canyon released by Students of Decay USA It's been a little while since we've last heard from Oakland-based sound cant help but listen to Glass Canyon, Marielle V. Jakobsonss new solo album, visually. Frankly, Marielles images are intriguing: purple sands, crystal orchards, cobalt waters, dusty trails, albite breath, and shale hollows. The songs on Glass Canyon do very little to replicate the recognizable sounds of their titular images. In the first minutes of Purple Sands, you hear something like a breath or waves - a natural sending out and then retracting. But as that subsides, so does any semblance of the world. Marielle hasnt made an alien music, but neither has she made something thoroughly rooted, as noted above, in bioacoustics. Marielle V Jakobsons Glass Canyon. July 12, 2012September 20, 2016, David James. I often play host to a great hunger, longing for a new piece of music to burrow into for weeks. Im grateful that in this age I have a reasonable chance of striking that vein several times a year, or having a trio new addictions at once or two or five albums of the year. Growing up, I remember falling in love with an album and listening to it with abusive regularity for months on end, because I had no clue that another perfect sound was out there beyond my grasp and lack of internet. So I swell with gratitude
