In a copy of Maurice Rabel's orchestration of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" -a copy rented out and therefore much correctiuon: A low "B" in the bass has been changed to an "A," thereby avoiding all manner of horrendously "forbidden" progressions and at this point in the score, scrawled in red crayon, is the phrase "Ma perche'? Ignorante!" ("But why? Bonehead!"), and benath the restored but academically offensive "B" is the signature "A. Toscanini."

This true story is typical of Mussorgsky's fate: In his own time he had too many "B's" in the bass. Today, his harmonic audacities either pass works, which were largely ignored when they were new, have found increasing acceptance in the last half of the centry.

In its original form as a suite for piano, "Pictures at an Exhibition" attracted little attention and was not even printed until 1886, five years after the composer's death. But in 1924, when Ravel orchestrated it at the request of Serge Koossevitzky, it leapt into immediate and permanent popularity.

"Pictures at an Exhibition" was inspired by and is name after a memorial showing os sketches and drawing by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann that was held by the St. Petersburg Society of Architects in the fall of 1874. (Harmann, who had died in the previous year at the age of thirty-nine, had been a close friend of Mussorgsky's and had shared the composer's strong nationalist ideas.) However, in Harmann's original sketches one finds nothing of the power, size and variety of Mussorgsky's music: Hartmann's works were not big Russian genre scenes in huge gold frames; they were modest sketches.

But, to the music. The suite begins with an introduction, Promenade.
