Adam Granduciel wasnt in a happy place when he began work on Lost in the Dream, his third album under the name The War on Drugs. Yet from his unhappiness hes conjured something magical. Lost in the Dream picks up where his previous record, Slave Ambient, left off: it drips with the sounds and textures of 80s AOR you can hear a lot of Springsteen in there, with some Mark Knopfler, a dash of Don Henley but played by a committed space-rock head. We think its great. Have a listen and tell us what you think. But lyrically I felt like I had to go into a part of myself I hadnt done before in my songs or work harder at it. I needed to go there and see how far I could let myself go, and put into music the way I was feeling. Lost in the Dream is out March 18 via Secretly Canadian. Sadaron above the Gods
Do It Now is a pretty average, if not dull and repetitive acid techno thumper with a very annoying sample throughout, which gets tiresome after two minute tops, but listening to it for six minutes, in company of run of the mill acid synths and lazy arrangement is just too much for me to handle. Not only that, but there is this incredibly corny, whining male yawn sampled, which is dropped about every twenty seconds, and believe me, it is really hard on the ears.
Flip the script, and you have Bass In The Place, a tune by Lost In Drugs, which is not as fast and pointlessly intense as the A side, but in return it has what has to be the best and most memorable hoover sequence in an London style acid techno track ever! Steadily rising and building, a hoover slightly reminiscent of the timeless "Mentasm" sound, fully comes to life around the 03:15 mark, where it gets accompanied by this straight from the old school sample going "bass in the place you know you can't touch". Not really any proper acid, but more old school attitude and memory lane value than you hoped for. And it's really great for mixing as well, since it takes time to properly develop, plus there's like a ninety second segment towards the end where not much goes on, thus leaving plenty space for your mixer tricks imagination. Fans of stuff like Mentasm, The Dominator, Energy Storm's Darkness Beyond and the similar stuff should most definitely check this one out. Pure old school ear candy. Pity Do It Now is so redundant though...
