This is no exception. Who is Shamek Farrah Who knows Who cares It's the music that's important. This is the standard spiritually intense new jazz one learns to expect from the label, soaked in some Eastern influences but always with its ear to the street. Musicians took their roles as leaders and spokesmen very seriously back then. This very adult statement from a group of very serious men is no exception. Shamek Farrah: First Impressions. Launched by trumpeter Charles Tolliver and pianist Stanley Cowell in New York in 1971, the Strata-East label became synonymous with the black-consciousness informed spiritual-jazz movement which was perhaps the crowning glory of African American music during the 1970s. Alongside Tolliver and Cowell, forward-looking musicians who recorded for Strata-East, attracted by its laissez-faire artistic policy and radical socio-cultural outlook, included Pharoah Sanders, Charles Brackeen, Clifford Jordan, the. "First Impressions" is one of the very best tunes in the strata east catalogue, fantastic piece of free improvised groove jazz. The players are kind of doing there solos together at the same time, but never loose touch to that bassline groove, outstanding, free, but never too free, just really soulful interaction and a mysterious ancient vibe to it.

IMO, this is the best tune on the LP, I never listened to the other ones in years.

Q-Tip sampled this bassline for one of the A Tribe Called Quest records.

Reissues without the "New York" address printed on the otherwise identical label fetched up to 300$ on ebay on a regular basis a couple of years ago, if you don't believe me, check out popsike, I believe this is, because people were not aware of the repress, which is definitely rare too. http://www.popsike.com/SHAMEK-FARRAHFIRST-IMPRESSIONS-1974-LP-RECORDNR-MINT/250608975817.html

I bought my copy at the end of the 90ties at Soultrade Records and never (!) saw it again in any record store.

The sound quality is good enough, but I never had a chance to compare to an original pressing.
