It consists of Rob Sonic, Fred Ones, Eric M. and Preservation. The group was described by CMJ New Music Monthly as hip-hop's Radiohead. In 1999, Sonic Sum released the first studio album, The Sanity Annex, on Ozone Music. It has received critical acclaim worldwide. XLR8R called it one of the most criminally slept-on albums of the indie hip-hop boom. In 2004, the group released the second studio album, Films, exclusively in Japan. It was re. This album from Bronx rapper Rob Sonic and his crew of producer friends - Fred Ones, Eric M. and Preservation - came out in Japan a few years before the label troubles that stopped it from being available elsewhere could be overcome. This album however, is certainly not for everybody. It definitely skirts the edges of underground hip-hop and may be too abstract for many hip-hoppers taste. The production, is well done, and more complex and musical than many. Originally a Japan-only release, Films, Sonic Sum's follow-up to their 2000 debut Sanity Annex, has been unavailable on these shores for the past four years. It's not hard to see why. Rob Sonic, Def Jux solo artist and the sole MC between Sonic Sum's three globe-scattered producers, works in note-card lyricism, avoiding things like breath control, fluid enjambment, or narrative. Examples from Films of his evacuated line breaks, grating twenty-dollar flourishes of polysyllabic, Latinate words, and asinine emphatics UN-inter-EST Ready to AD-minister RE-flex, HA-mmer, WA-te.
