Peng is the debut studio album by English-French rock band Stereolab. It was released on 26 May 1992 by Too Pure in the United Kingdom, and was later released by American Recordings in the United States. The cover art and album title a German onomatopoeia for a loud pop or bang are derived from a cartoon called der tödliche finger that appeared in a 1970 issue of Hotcha, a Swiss underground newspaper. Different panels of the same cartoon were adapted into cover art for other early Stereolab releases. Ping Pong is a track by Stereolab from the album Mars Audiac Quintet released in 1994. This track is rated in the top 3 of all tracks on . Ping Pong by Stereolab Year: 1994 From the album Mars Audiac Quintet track 5. Average Rating: 84100 from 23 votes. Ping Pong appears on the following albums by Stereolab . Peng is a blueprint of what Stereolab would become: a band experimenting with 1960s pop harmonies, teethy guitars, and the borderless world of analog electronics. Its an incomplete picture of the band-two key members, singer-guitarist Mary Hansen and drummer Andy Ramsay, had yet to join-but it has an immediate magic to it, like being there in the studio beside them before their career kicks off. Its also the closest Stereolab come to being an indie-rock band. Their songwriting chops are there, but they havent yet discovered all the instruments and techniques that could, and would, eventual. Was surprised that this was not among the Stereolab reissues. Press this baby up and tack on the Lo-Fi EP for some of the bonus tracks!
Stay away from the 2008 reissue. Go for the first pressing if you have the cash. Otherwise go for the remastered 2018 pressing peeps
Right now, this amazing album (still fresh after more than quarter of a century), sounds the closest to White Light/White Heat i can think of from an avant garde point of view.
Just picked up a new, sealed LP of Peng today 10/31/18...black vinyl with insert and mp3 coupon, not the clear vinyl that is supposedly coming...but with the matrix number 144078E1/2. Sounds like what this record is supposed to sound like! Very happy with the pressing and it's clearly not the version from 2008 people say sounds like garbage :) The store had "Space Age Bachelor Pad" as well but I didn't pick that up as I already have a copy. Anyway, happy to have a good pressing of this classic back in circulation!
