This album is probably in my top five at this point, it's just incredible. Josh Gregory. Josh Gregory Huge fan of this band. This is a great addition to their already amazing discography. A little different approach than their previous albums however still has that subrosa sound that we love. You get lost in the layers of this album. SubRosa is an experimental sludge-doom band from Salt Lake City, a city plagued by the tension of opposites. Within the SubRosa crucible, sludgy low-end and high volume lock arms with ultra-melodicism, folk and experimental elements delivered through the haunting ambience of two electric violins. Four of Battle of Ages six songs break the 10-minute mark, with two lasting for a quarter-hour. These unabashed track lengths give SubRosa room to roam and the ability to fold a panoply of sounds and ideas into one space. Black Majesty, for instance, opens with Vernon singing a black widows lullaby Isnt it good to be acquainted with darkness she begins over crackling electronics. The song soon lunges forward, though: room-rattling drums cut beneath a low-slung riff before the whole band shifts into a double-time sprint, where screeching violins intensify the raw nerves of the rhythm. 2016 Profound Lore. More By Subrosa. More Constant Than the Gods. No Help for the Mighty Ones. Live at Roadburn, 2017. The comparatively newer Salt Lake City band SubRosa is playing that fest, and their sound alone connects those same dots. They've got two electronic violinists and soaring clean vocals courtesy of Rebecca Vernon that pull more from '60s'70s progressive rock than from the usual metal gods, but it's clear from the thick-toned doom riffs and the occasional scream that SubRosa acknowledge the impact those bands left on aggressive music. If SubRosa covered an Alice Cooper song, I bet they'd do a great take on Black Juju. For This We Fought the Battle of Ages P. Still, For ThisStill, For This successfully captures the essence of a narrative, and the songs seem to melt into each other, propelled by the same force. The problem is that this unseen force is too tangible. For This We Fought the Battle of Ages doesnt feel like it surpasses space and time, or bridges a gap between consciousness and dreams. Once its over, its forgotten fairly easily, save maybe a couple of Vernons stronger melodies. It digs its nails into your scalp, but doesnt truly grab at the psyche. Wound of the Warden
