The unpronounceable symbol is an alias used by Prince from June 7 1993 to May 16 2000 - he changed his stage name to the symbol which is a combination of the symbols for male and female . Because the symbol is unpronounceable, he's often referred by others as The Symbol, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince . Prince's name is now written as a strange symbol he calls the love symbol. As such he no longer goes by the name Prince and now insists on being referred to as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. Its little wonder that the artist formerly known as her husband casts long shadows over her life. He was twice her age when they met aged just 16, she became his schoolgirl muse, then two years later, his lover, for whom he penned the exquisitely melancholy love song The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. The story of how Prince fell for Mayte is suitably bizarre. Mayte's father was a pilot in the US military and her mother was an academic and linguist, with a passion for dance, which she passed on to her daughter. As a result, Mayte was trained in both ballet and bellydance, performing professionally from the age of eight. The Artist Formerly Known as Prince supporting his 1996 album, Chaos and Disorder with a performance of lead single Dinner with Delores on The Late Show with David Letterman. Has been played on. Now playing . When Warners disagreed, on both counts, Prince began appearing in public with the word Slave written across his face, and changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol - leading the press to christen him The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Although they contained an occasional gem - such as 1996's playful Dinner With Delores - the records damaged his reputation with casual fans, who were confused and disinterested by what amounted to an employment dispute. The artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known as Prince is obviously the Trope Namer. Music website Rhapsody used a subversion of this trope as a Take That against Prince in one instance, referring to him as The Artist Never Known as Tall. From a certain perspective, Prince's decision to rename himself makes perfect sense: Prince was a trademarked identity that was actually owned by his record company of the time. Dinner with Delores. Just better. Dinner with Delores is a song by Prince his stage name at that time being an unpronounceable symbol, see cover art, the only single from his 1996 album Chaos and Disorder. Although the single was not released in the United States, the promotional video was shown on music video channels there. The CD single was backed with the short Had U and Right the Wrong, Prince's first true experiment with country music. Eventually, the Artist and Warner parted company for good, but by that point, the proper pronunciation of an arcane symbol had become the least of Warners - or s problems. Time Capsule: June 7, 1993.
