To listen to the Avalanches is to wrestle with time. The sample-rich music made by this group of Australian DJs makes you think about where its pieces come from, what those fragments meant to you then, and what they mean to you embedded into the group's finished songs. Theres nostalgia and loss ingrained in every bar, and you can sense the erratic movement of past, present, and future from the first listen. Speaking of time, theres also the fact that the Avalanches waited 16 years to follow up their debut album, 2000s landmark Since I Left You. To be a fan of the Avalanches, you had to. The Avalanches. While it was a bit pricy for not really being anything special packaging-wise (not 180g either), the sound quality is excellent.
Between my friends and I, we received 3 copies of this pressing. While the packaging was nothing special, none of our copies arrived damage in any sense - corners were all crisp and the inner sleeves had no tears from the records shifting around during shifting. Great pressing! I personally like the cover art more than the others.
The packaging from Newbury was frankly too thin. There was no cushion for the record in the box. I'm pretty sure a good percentage of these have damage, ranging from crushed corners to full-on dents. If you're gonna do a special edition, why not ship it so that it arrives intact? Secondly, there's no CD. Why do all the copies of this on vinyl except for the "limited edition" ones not come with a CD? With a price tag of $27 (IIRC), you'd think they'd include a CD like all the other copies. Seriously. Not even a download code. Lastly, why the hell isn't this a gatefold album? Generally when you have a double album, you use a gatefold. Not worth it IMO. Just get the regular edition, which I assure you will arrive with less damage and even have a CD.
None of the US versions came with a CD or download code.
